From Geek to Chic: Exploring comics, games and geek culture

In recent years, there’s been a change of perspective in popular culture. Interests such as science fiction, comics and video games – once marginal hobbies – are now part of the mainstream. On a cultural, sociological and economical level, what does this change mean? And what can we learn from it?
This elective course will explore cultural experiences ranging from the personal to the historical in the ever-changing world of geek culture.
The course’s content includes:
- Science fiction and fantasy books and films
- The growth and diversification of the comic book industry
- How fandom has developed over the years
- Manga, anime and cross-cultural expressions
- The boom in table-top and role-playing games
- Video game culture and trends
- What it means to be a “geek”: past, present and future
- Inclusion and diversification: how far have we come?
This is an excellent chance for students to talk about this fascinating area of culture while also developing their English skills.
Students taking this elective will:
- Have the chance to learn and practise subject-related language
- Develop a greater understanding of the topic of geek culture
- Work on soft skills through debating and expressing their ideas
